Assumptions behind these numbers

Broadcom renewal: Current annual spend multiplied by your renewal ratio, projected over 3 years flat.

Azure VMware Solution (AVS): ~$80,000 per host per year all-in (AV36 reserved 3-year + 15% for storage, egress, support). Minimum 3-host cluster enforced for production. Windows Server licensing included.

Amazon EVS: ~$95,000 per host per year (i4i.metal reserved + VCF subscription BYOL still paid to Broadcom + 15% overhead).

Native AWS: ~$35,000 per host equivalent per year (assumes 15 VMs per original host, m6i-class reserved, post-modernization right-sizing of 40-60%). One-time migration cost ~$15K per host.

Native Azure: ~$38,000 per host equivalent per year (similar density, D-series reserved, Windows Hybrid Benefit assumed).

What's not included: Egress to other clouds, premium support tiers above standard, third-party tools (Veeam, monitoring), staff training.

How We Calculate These Numbers

Public list prices, reasonable density assumptions, and the patterns we see across 50+ VMware migrations.

Public Cloud List Prices

AVS host pricing from Azure VMware Solution pricing and EVS from Amazon EVS pricing. 3-year reserved tier assumed.

Workload Density

Native cloud estimates assume an average of 15 VMs per original host (typical mid-market VMware density) and a post-modernization right-sizing factor of 40-60%.

Field-Tested Multipliers

Renewal multipliers, migration project costs, and operational overhead come from the 50+ VMware migrations we've delivered since the Broadcom acquisition closed.

These are directional estimates, not quotes. Real costs depend on workload mix, region, reserved commitments, and licensing.

VMware Migration Cost Calculator FAQ

Common questions about the calculator and our VMware migration practice.

How accurate is this VMware migration cost calculator?

The numbers are directional, not quotes. We use public list prices for Azure VMware Solution (AVS) and Amazon EVS host pricing, plus per-host all-in estimates for native AWS and Azure modernization that include compute, storage, networking, and operational overhead. Your real costs depend on your workload mix, reserved instance commitments, regional pricing, and licensing terms. Use this to size the opportunity, then ask us for a detailed model.

Why is the Broadcom renewal multiplier set to 4x by default?

From the VMware estates we've migrated since Broadcom acquired VMware in late 2023, most customers we've seen face renewal quotes between 3x and 5x their prior pricing. A small group at the top end sees 6x to 10x due to VCF bundling. Set the multiplier to whatever ratio matches your actual renewal quote.

Why is native modernization cheaper than lift-and-shift to AVS or EVS?

AVS and EVS run VMware on cloud bare-metal hosts. You pay for the host whether it's full or not. Native cloud lets you right-size each VM, autoscale, use spot or reserved instances, and replace VMs with managed services like RDS or S3. After modernization, the same workload typically runs on 40-60 percent of the original compute footprint. The trade-off is time and engineering effort.

Should I go straight to native cloud or lift-and-shift first?

Depends on your renewal timeline. If your Broadcom renewal hits in under 6 months, lift-and-shift to AVS or EVS first to escape the price hike, then modernize over 18-24 months. If you have 12+ months of runway, you can go native directly. We cover the decision in detail in our VMware migration playbook linked below.

Does this calculator include licensing for Windows Server and SQL Server?

It assumes you bring your own Windows and SQL Server licenses to the new platform under Azure Hybrid Benefit (for Azure) or License Mobility (for AWS). If you need to buy new licenses, add roughly 15-20 percent to the native cloud numbers. AVS includes Windows Server licensing in the host price; EVS does not.

Are these numbers in USD, GBP, AED, or SAR?

Switch the currency selector at the top of the calculator. We convert at typical commercial rates and adjust defaults so the values are realistic for each market. The underlying cost model is denominated in USD and converted for display.
